I love these words, written by Brittney Hartley while summarizing ideas from Nietzche. I think this is a great aspiration for life.
“For Nietzche it was the idea of the Ubermensch in German, translated to something like the Overman or ‘something more than a man.’ The Overman is an idealized individual who rises above conventional norms, values, and limitations to achieve their full potential and create their own values. It is someone who doesn’t rely on traditional moral or societal rules, but instead forges their own path and lives authentically according to their own vision. This concept emphasizes personal growth, creativity, and self-determination, encouraging individuals to overcome limitations and become the best version of themselves; walking pieces of art.
— Brittney Hartley, No Nonsense Spirituality (bolding mine)
This path of the “overman” (or how about “overhuman”) is not easy. It’s lonely and hard. It’s swimming against the current all alone. But it’s the way toward a deeply authentic, whole, and fulfilling life.
So it is the path I want to take. I want to be the best version of myself. I want to be a walking piece of art.
I love that. "A walking piece of art" -- something that's very personal and could only be made by you, and it exists all of its own accord without need for permission or approval from anyone else. Sometimes I already feel like I'm some weird assemblage piece, a seemly random jumble of things that occasionally fit together but just as often do not. Maybe I've been spending too much time trying to find the meaning and not enough time letting it grow as it will? Hmm. 🤔
You always give me great things to think about! Thanks for sharing this.
